Intersex Disorder (Ambiguous Genitalia)

Definition/Overview

Intersex disorder, often referred to as ambiguous genitalia, is when a baby’s genitalia is not well formed or the child has general characteristics of both sexes. As a result, it is unclear at birth as to whether the child is a male or a female.

This disorder is present to some degree in approximately one in every hundred births. Between 0.1% and 0.2% of live births are ambiguous enough to require the medical attention of a pediatric specialist.

Because of the complex nature of intersex disorder, your medical team will recommend the most appropriate course of action to be completed at the time when it would be most conducive to your child’s individual needs. Treatment may include reconstructive surgery, hormone therapy or a combination of both.
